Was written Hebrew available in the time of Moses? Was it possible for Moses to write the Torah?
Tim Mahoney explores the evidence that Hebrew did exist at the time of Moses and the possibility that Moses really did write the first books of the Bible.
In the documentary Tim Mahoney is looking for evidence to prove or disprove that Moses wrote the first five books of the Bible.
Tim interviewed several archeologists and mainstream scholars who believe that Archeology disproves the stories of the Bible.
Experts William Dever, Donald Redford, and Douglas Knight all grew up in conservative, Bible believing Christian homes and no longer believe because they are convinced that archeological evidence has not been found to support early Biblical stories. These scholars believe that Moses could not have written the first five books of the Bible because they say that an alphabet was not available at the time of Moses.
Tim decided to continue to follow the evidence to see what would happen. Would he too become an agnostic or would he find evidence supporting the authorship of the Moses?
He asked Doug Knight if there are any scholars who believe that Moses wrote the Pentateuch. Knight mentions the Documentary Hypothesis that suggests that several scribes had written the Pentateuch much later based on stories told by their parents.
Professor Peter Gentry, a leading expert in the ancient Near East, working in a dozen ancient languages says of the authorship of the Pentateuch “I think it comes from Moses himself.” Gentry specializes in Greek and the Semitic languages.
Gentry says many scholars today are unaware of evidence that has been found in the last few years. Gentry says that the Documentary Hypothesis has been disproved and it can be shown that Moses did have the alphabet that he could use to write the Torah.
Mahoney travels to Egypt, the Sinai Peninsula and Saudi Arabia to find evidence. The Documentary follows this journey.
Tim asks: Did Moses have the ability to write the Torah. Tim demonstrates that the Exodus occurred about 1450 BC. This means the writing system Moses used must have been available by 1450 BC. Many scholars say Hebrew was developed after 1450 BC.
Mahoney finds evidence that Hebrew was available by 1450 BC. He demonstrates that it was available to Moses in Egypt at that time.
He examines some of the earliest manuscripts of the Bible we know found in the Dead Sea Scrolls at Qumran. He also examines a silver page that was written even earlier.
Mahoney also interviews Duane Garret and others. He shows very convincing evidence that an alphabet and written Hebrew were available for Moses to use to record the events of the Exodus and the Red Sea Crossing. I found the documentary’s evidence convincing and a verification for my faith.
